2010 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series Kicks Off April 17th On Tuscany Coast

Just one year after its inauguration, the Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series has exploded in popularity, with 27 competing teams making their way to beautiful Lerici, Italy this weekend for the first stage in the premier event.  "We're thrilled to see so many teams headed to the first Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series event," said Melges Europe President Federico Michetti.  "The entry list has doubled in size since last year, and we're grateful to see so many sailors appreciate the kind of top-notch event that the Audi series represents."

Competitors include some of the top teams in Italian racing as well as a large number of newcomers to the class, with Benedetto Giallongo's Value Team the clear favorite headed to the starting line with tactician Enrico Fonda and Francesco Scarselli on the helm. Luca Domenici's Notaro finished second in the 2009 Series, and with Andrea Casale on tactics and Piero Vigo on trim, Notaro has a strong chance of ending Giallongo's domination of the young Melges 20 Class. TURNOVER makes a statement for the first 2010 event, with owner Renato Vallivero committing the boat to the hands of a skilled team made up of Marco Perazzo (helm), Daniele Cassinari on tactics and Nicolas Dal Ferro on trim. Top Melges 32 teams continue to fill the entry list, with the always competitive Lanfranco 'Momo' Cirillo's Fantastica coming off a hard-fought victory in the first Audi Melges 32 event just weeks ago. Marco Morina's Sei Tu and Carlo "Albi" Alberini's Calvi Network always in contention for top honors at any major event.  The awesome graphics on Stefano di Properzio's Hulk match the quality of his crew - Melges 24 World Champions Federico Michetti and Lorenzo "Rufo" Bressani fill out the team, while the all-girl team led by Luisa Bambozzi's Trouble Makers will do their best to keep up with the top talent they're up against. "It is so great to have a boat that's designed for men, women, and even youth sailors to handle," said Bambozzi. "It's the most fun I've ever had on the water!"

With so many teams on the line and so many great sailors involved, the fun is just beginning. And the competition continues to grow by leaps and bounds.
