Clean Sweep for Team INTAC in St. Maarten
11 March 2011
TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands (March 11, 2011) - BVI's Team INTAC returned victorious from St. Maarten on Monday March 7th after an impressive clean sweep in the 2011 Budget Marine Match Race, Gill Commodores Cup, and the 31st St. Maarten International Heineken Regatta. Racing took place March 1-6, 2011, with nearly 190 boats entered into the 31st St. Maarten International Heineken Regatta including competitors from Europe, USA, Australia, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Posting first place finishes in every race throughout the weekend on the Melges 32 performance race boat “M32”, Team INTAC was named "Best Boat of the Regatta", having won their division in Spinnaker Racing Class (CSA2) as well as Best Performance in Friday’s challenging Around St. Maarten race. Helmsman and Team Captain James Mark Plaxton commented, “What an incredible experience for the whole team. This year really showed that hard work and dedication paid off. It’s great for a BVI boat to go up against some of the toughest sailors from around the world and come out on top. It’s a proud moment for our Island and BVI racing.”
But for Plaxton, the winning streak actually began a few days earlier, with the match racing “Team INTAC”. Plaxton was a key crewman for Gavin Brady’s - Team INTAC’s undefeated performance in the Budget Marine Match Racing Cup, March 1-2.
In fact, with all three back-to-back events considered, Plaxton has become the first ever to attain 16 consecutive bullets in the combined 16 races and win, in a clean sweep, all three combined St. Maarten Regatta series, a truly incredible feat.
Team INTAC is sponsored by BVI Private Wealth Management firm INTAC GlobalInvestments, and was assembled this year by owner James Mark Plaxton and his race campaign team, led by USVI sailing legend and America's Cup champion Peter Holmberg. The crew, predominantly from the BVI and USVI, consisted of James Mark Plaxton, Peter Holmberg, Anthony Kotoun, Ben Beer, Maurice Kurg, Mark Stephenson, Leslie Baehr and Topher Kingsley-Williams.
INTAC GlobalInvestments President Tim Vermuelen said, "We are very happy with the results the INTAC Race Team’s have brought home and really appreciate the work they have done to promote the BVI and our company in the international sporting world. It’s certainly worth noting that their results on the race course so closely reflect the exceptional investment performance of INTAC’s Global Private Wealth Management Service."
Team INTAC now has their sights set on the St. Thomas International Rolex Regatta, which takes place March 25-27. Following this, they plan to finish off the Caribbean race season back at home, with the Gill BVI International Match Race Championships on March 30-31, followed by the BVI Spring Regatta, on April 1-3, 2011.
