Audi Melges 20 Nationals On Schedule Despite Looming Irene

24 August 2011

Amidst the excitement of the 2011 Audi Melges 20 U.S. National Championship, hosted by Sail Newport becoming the largest gathering of Audi Melges 20s in North America ever, it seems that levels of weather uncertainty loom in the near distance, in the shape of the Atlantic season's first major and immensely powerful Hurricane Irene. All should rest assured, racing is still on schedule, as the Organizing Authority (OA) continues to monitor the weather.

A record-breaking 30 teams have arrived in Newport and geared up for what will be an awesome event nonetheless. Registration and practice are scheduled for Thursday, August 25, with racing originally planned on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. According to recent forecasts, Irene is set to make landfall, somewhere along the New England coastline of the United States.

All teams are strongly encouraged to attend the Skipper's meeting on Thursday, at the Newport Shipyard, Belle's Restaurant at 6:30 p.m. A full debrief will be issued about the event schedule as well as the severe weather situation possibly at hand. Leading up to the Skipper's meeting, notices may be sent directly to competitors, so remain stay close to melges20.com and your local e-mail sources.
