Hello sailing enthusiast..Irwin R Fletcher here......

This was a great weekend for the Melges 17s to return to Pewaukee Lake for the Inland Lake Yachting Association Championship as this was the 4th event of the 2012 PYC Great 8 Championships presented by Russ Darrow Group. 17 boats were on hand as skippers age ranged from 9 years old to 65 years old.

Here is a little recap of the racing. Race one saw Hans Meyer 77 grabbed the lead early but Harry Melges IV 218 was moving fast through the fleet and took the lead and was never seen again to win race 1 followed by Hans Meyer 77 and Young Kyle Navin 148. Race 2 was 95 Heidi Schwedas turn to lead early but again Harry IV 218 was quick to gybe and run a great streak down the lake to take the lead to win race 2. Race 3 in the afternoon saw velocity changes along with big wind shifts as Deb Gluek was able to take the lead and win the race followed by Lesa Gutnekunst 213 and Harry IV 218. Race 4 saw the race committee as the only ones to slow down Harry IV 218 as he was over the line at the start and never heard the call and retired from the race at the first windward mark. Jeff Lewis 158 grabbed the lead but the fleet was cutting into his lead each leg! Positions were changing quickly but Hans Meyer 77 finally caught Jeff at the finish line beating him by no more than a foot! Tough race for Mr. Lewis but a great race for Hans and the spectators to watch! Saturday evening the sailors enjoyed a open bar cocktail hour while the PYC crew then treated them to a fabulous pork chop dinner that was very enjoyable.

Sunday saw challenging conditions as PRO Mark DeGuire was able to get all the competitors on the water so when the winds settled in he was able to start a race. Race 5 had 95 Heidi Schweda over at the start and she never heard the call and retired at the first windward mark! But we saw the return of Harry IV 218 as he lead most of the race and finished with a comfortable lead to take race 5. Rob Conley 505 had a great race as he finished second followed by Deb Gluek 51. After a short break to let the wind continue to settle in as velocity and wind direction were changing at a fast pace they started race 6. 505 Rob Conley and 218 Harry IV were both over at the start but returned to clear themselves to continue to race. Lesa Gutenkunst 213 grabbed an early lead but wind velocity dropped and when it came back up Deb Gluek was there to take the lead and take the victory. Hans Meyer 77 finished second to secure his second ILYA Melges 17 Championship. Harry IV 218 crawled back to 3rd after restarting and finish 3rd overall. The PYC again did a great job hosting this event as much fun was to be had by all!
