2013 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series Kicks Off In Gaeta, April 19-21
20 April 2013
Gaeta, Italy - Between Saturday and Sunday the Audi Sailing Series Melges 20 will be taking place in beautiful Gaeta, Italy. As already seen with the Melges 32, the Audi Melges 20 will be starting off their Mediterranean season in the Gulf of Gaeta where twenty-one teams are in attendance, ready to go head to head on facing up with mild weather conditions.
The complete racing agenda will allow teams to discard the worst result, only after the completion of six races, with a maximum of four races per day.
Top teams will be competing on this first regatta session, such as Alessandro Rombelli's STIG and reigning Gold Cup Champion Dario Levi's Fremito d'Arja, just to name a few.
Among the favourite teams there are 2012 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series Guido Miani's Out of Reach, Renato Vallivero's Audi Turnover, and last but certainly not least is Achille Onorato aboard Mascalzone Latino Jr.
Other very relevant Class contenders that may exceed everyone's expectations are Federico Albano's 3Menda, Mirko de Falco on Pecceré, Lauro Bonora on Camay and Francesco Farnetti's ITA-157.
The International Audi Melges 20 Class Assocaition would like to welcome fleet newcomers Stefano Santucci on Tomahawk and Michele Dandolo on Tachicardia.
Friday afternoon included much preparation for the teams, including a practice session scheduled at 15.30, warming up for tough competition and studying the course. Practice was also a great opportunity for Gaeta students to get close to the sailing world. Every Audi Melges 20 took aboard a young sailing fan. This initiative, put forth by by the Yacht Club Gaeta E.V.S. four years ago, and now in 2013, has been adopted by B-Plan Sport&Events in collaboration with the International Audi Melges 20 Class and Melges Europe.
Gaeta is the first of five amazing events included in the 2013 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series event. Event No. 2 takes place in Porto Ercole (18-19 May), Portoferraio (8-9 July), Torbole (6-7 July) and Porto Rotondo (29 August - 1 September) where the first European Championship title will be held, as a result of being awarded official ISAF International Class status.
