Tight At The Top In Talamone
7 June 2014
Talamone, Italy - Expectations were high on the second day of racing in Talamone at the 2014 Melges 32 Audi-Tron Sailing Series. Despite the challenging sailing conditions (6-10 knots of breeze and flat water) the Race Committee rolled out three more races with Roberto Tomasini Grinover’s Robertissima maintaining his overall lead from Day One, extending by four additional points.
As for the rest of the scoreboard, everything changed and in some cases quite drastically. For example, relatively new fleetcomer Arturo di Lorenzo aboard Malafemmena was fifth overall after the first day of racing. Now, with discards in play and a phenomenal performance on the water (4-2-3), di Lorenzo claims second place overall, a simple, anything-but-impossible six points behind Tomasini Grinover.
Keeping things super tight in points are Mauro Mocchegiani on Fratelli Giacomel Audi e-Tron and Alessandro Rombelli’s Azimut by STIG in third and fourth overall respectively tied with twenty-three points each. In fifth, one point further back is another fleet newbie — Fritz Homann on Wilma.
Sunday, the final day of racing in Talamone is set to be nothing short of spectacular as the stakes are high and with the last two races scheduled — it is truly a final opportunity for teams to make their move in an effort to secure a podium position.
