Christian and Sam Spencer Lead Junior Fleet, Cox and Boo Dominating Senior Fleet at 2014 ILYA X Boat Champs
26 July 2014
Consistency pays off and the Pewaukee Spencers racked up nine points in today's three races on the Junior course. Geneva's Finn Rowe and Hunter Sharpe had the second best day but Harry Melges IV with Henry Chapman took home two race wins.
Harry Melges, IV walked away with race one in heavy, heavy wind-so ferocious the Senior Fleet abandoned the race due to gusts over 30. The Junior Fleet kept sailing with a steady 15-18 and an occasional gust in the low 20's. Melges showed his starting acumen and then lengthened with each leg. The wide windward mark with offset allowed planing and Melges was a rocket ship with spray flying.
With the high winds, came a shortened course and early lunch. The afternoon was an entirely different lake and race style. Winds were at times 5mph and never greater than 10 for a early afternoon light breeze. Both the junior and senior fleets took an on-water break and, voila, the wind freshened for a nice medium wind last race.
Geneva and Pewaukee are dominating the junior fleet but all boys. Beulah's Brigit Barr is a top ten finisher nearly each race and sits as the sole girl in the top ten with Sydney Probst as her crew.
The morning race was abandoned due to high wind. Nora Kiernan with Kathleen Lee as crew had the distinction of a first place upwind and leeward mark rounding. They completed two races in the afternoon but the wind had died for an entirely different day of sailing.
Kate Cox with Izzi Boo sits on top with a throwout of fifth. She won a race today and sits four points ahead of today's other race leader, JP Friend with Charlie Allen.
Cox is shown here alongside one of yesterday's race winners, Alec Bischoff and Quinn Kaiser.
JP Friend with Charlie Allen takes the gun far from homelake Pewaukee. While there are no photos, the other race winners are Patrick Schmidt and Jonah Boykin from Beulah, Nick Rusher with Charlie Eckert - Cedar and DJ Jaessing with Marie King from Cedar.

The social side has been fun-filled with Gull Lake providing entertainment to get everyone moving. Pewaukee took the volleyball tournament. Izzi Boo won the Go Pro camera.
