Forty teams representing eleven nations assembled for the start of the 2016 Melges 20 European Sailing Series
Porto Venere, Italy - After two complete races on opening day of the 2016 Melges 20 European Sailing Series, long-time class supporter and current International Class Chairman Richard Davies on Section 16 scored a 1-2 to lead the forty-strong fleet in Porto Venere, Italy. “We had a really strong day on the water,” said Davies post racing. “We sailed well and the boat was well-prepared. It was a tricky day on the course and as always in the Melges 20, it’s never easy, and it’s not over until it’s over. All in all though, it was a great day and a lot of fun. Tomorrow is supposed to be breezy so we’ll see what happens.”
“This is a brand new Section 16 team. So like everyone else, we are focused on the forthcoming Worlds in Scarlino. We want to sail well and continue to enjoy the racing in this fantastic class.”
After an early and brief postponement, teams went racing in light and challenging conditions. Several teams saw moments of brilliance today which included South African entrants Tina Plattner and Tony Norris aboard TNT Racing rounding the first weather mark of the day in the top slot. Matteo Marenghi Vaselli on Raya finished second and the Plattner/Norris team in third.
The second and final race of the day found Guido Miani’s Out of Reach in the lead to grab a wire-to-wire win. Davies put up a great chase finishing second, and Russia’s Dmitry Samokhin on Rocknrolla took third.
Seated twelfth overall, but currently in the lead Corinthian position is Johannes Lind-Widestram on Intermezzo, thanks to a fourth place finish in Race One. “We had a very good day. We are super happy about our fourth place finish in the first race. The second start was a little tough. Overall though it was a fantastic, magical day on the water. It really just doesn’t get any better,” said Jonas Lind-Widestram, crewmember on Intermezzo.
“For the season, we hope to do well and aspire to win the Corinthians at the Worlds in Scarlino. Johannes and I have sailed together since we were 17-years old, so this is a awesome way to continue to sail in a great environment. We love not only competing against all the best professional sailors in the world, but also the best amateurs. Having the possibility to do both is great, great fun!”
Post racing, teams were off to enjoy an amazing crew dinner buffet at the Grand Hotel Portovenere!
More racing continues on Saturday.
