SANTA CRUZ, Calif.---How tough was it on the last day of the 2007 Fullpower Melges 24 World Championship, hosted by the Santa Cruz Yacht Club?So tough, with Monterey Bay cranking up 30 knots of howling chaos, that Dave Ullman, the winner, said, "We weren't racing at the end, just surviving."So tough that Hank Stuart's race committee announced as the first race of the day was finishing that there wouldn't be a second---a first in the class's 10 world championships. So tough that 19 of the 58 starters did not finish. 2006 World Championship
1 Sep 06 -TEAM BETE AND NICOLA CELON WIN 2006 MELGES 24 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
When I wrote last night that this regatta wouldn't be over until the fat lady sang I had no concept of the Wagnerian dramas that would unfolded on this final day of the 2006 Melges 24 World Championship in Hyeres where two races were sailed in an easterly wind of 5-8 knots.
Going into the day Bete, owned by Ezio Amadori of Italy, helmed by Nicola Celon and crewed by Manuel Giubellini, Ralmondo Tonelli and Alberto Bolzan, was lying in second place 11 points behind DRP Partner & Partners, owned by Frenchman Philippe Ligot and helmed by Francois Brenac with William Thomas, Christian Ponthieu and Thomas Allin crewing. Many assumed that the championship was all but sewn up by the French crew, but as the day unfolded it became clear this was not the case. INTERNATIONAL MELGES 24 CLASS ASSOCIATION PRESS RELEASE -
21 MAY 2006
BRIAN PORTER WINS MELGES 24 NORTH AMERICAN TITLE

The final day of racing at the Melges 24 North American Championship was, quite literally, a wash out with torrential rain and light cyclonic winds. The race committee, jury and 31 Melges 24 crews left the dock ready to attempt a 1230 start as scheduled but it was not to be. Periodically the rain stopped and everyone's hopes were raised as the wind did its best to fill in, but it never became stable enough to actually get underway so the championship comes to a close with only six of the ten scheduled races completed.
Fortunately six races is sufficient to constitute a championship and so Brian Porter from Winnetka, IL, and his Full Throttle crew of Harry Melges III, Dave Navin and John Porter are declared the 2006 Melges 24 North American Champions by just one point from Newport Beach's Dave Ullman sailing Pegasus 505 with Bill Hardesty, Brian Hutchinson, Casey Smith and Shana Phelan. Dave Ullman was extremely gracious in defeat - "It was a shame not to race today but those guys did a great job and really deserved to win. When your worst finish is a fourth you deserve to win." Third place goes to Seadon Wijsen from San Francisco sailing Pareto Optimal with Bruce Ayres from Newport Beach aboard Monsoon fourth overall.MORE Full Results are available from www.melges24na2006.com/results.html

M17 Art Brereton Wins the 2006 Melges17 National Championship
Art Brereton and crew Harry Melges are Melges 17 National Champions for a second consecutive time. Brereton modestly admitted that it was luck that got them the win on race one on the final day of the championship, however that is what sealed the deal for them. For the remaining three races they sailed well, had consistent results and a whole lot of speed. "It's all luck. Gotta keep the pedal to the metal all the time. This is a Melges 24 on ritalin. The A Scow may be the ultimate ride, but this is the ultimate two-man ride, " said Brereton. Sunday's conditions were a complete 180 degree turn around from Saturday. Glorious blue skies with prevailing sunshine, and the wind was good too. A steady 10-15 and occasionally a higher gust would blow through. This got the teams really excited. MORE
