8 October 2010

A very nice day down here at Lake Lanier Sailing Club with temps in the upper 70s, no clouds and light southeast winds. After a 1 hour delay in getting started Race 4 started at 11 a.m. in about 8 mph of wind from a southeasterly direction. It was the third different part of this large Georgia lake we sailed on so all the skippers had to stay sharp with all the changes presented by the new course.

Tight scores from day 1 and the first three races set up some shuffling in final places after 4 races today. Some folks had some great races and some had some challenging races.

Cam McNeil sailed a very smart conservative race up in the top today giving him a very nice lead after four races. Jeff Surles who now lives in Kansas City, sails out of Wisconsin but was a former member of Lake Lanier Sailing Club won today's race bringing him back into the top ten. Joe Rotunda had a top three putting him into second. Noel Neumann had another top 5 putting him in third. Jeff Grinnan sailed a good race and is now in fourth place. Eric Hood moved from 8th to 5th with a 6th place race. Ted Keller, Dan "Squad Car" Fink and Steve Everist all had races in the upper teens and low 20s moving them back in the fleet.

Key to today's race was recognizing the big left shift at 2 minutes to go. A lot of skippers got caught in the upper right end of the starting line and never recovered.  First 5 boats to the first mark were all at the left end of the starting line today. Tacking quickly to port and escaping was key to getting into that top 10 group. Then just maintaining clear air and staying in dark water was your next move to staying fast throughout this race.

After a short delay mid-afternoon we tried for Race 5 but conditions were too light.

Tonight , the famous LLSC dinner along with our National Class meeting led by Jeff Annis.

Also of note Ryan Gaskin of Columbia, SC and also the commodore at that club bought my new MC 2523.  This is an exciting development as he along with the group in Columbia are really promoting MCs and bringing youth sailors along in the MC Class. Congratulations to Ryan!!

Full Results can be seen at the Lake Lanier Sailing Club website which I believe is The final and full results for the MC website should be up this weekend and I will also send finals to Joy for I don't have the scores in hand at the moment.
