Twenty knots and gusty wind for the final days racing at the Melges 24 SLAM  NSW State Titles on Lake Macquarie.

The Melges 24’s were lit up and smokin’ in the final two races.  Exciting racing ensued with downwind bowl outs, the action for spectators were awesome and the exhausted crews landed on the dock with big grins and plenty of club banta.

The Melges 24’s lifted and planed downwind, crews were backed up and hiking hard riding gusts at seventeen knots,  with  occasional whoops and hollers.

Consistent  crew work by the team on Warwick Rooklyn’s  Bandit  Dave O’Connor, Sean O’Rourke, Tim Austin and Jay Griffin closed out the regatta winning both races convincingly.

The Dargaville Family (Jim, James and Will) and Shane Nairn on board Matilda, AUS 19 got off to an impressive port tack start in the first race of the day and sailed well to get a second place before losing one son out the back in the following race, the Nixon Family third over the line helping to cement their regatta place of second.

In the final race after flashes of brilliance throughout the event Murray Walters and his team No Comment  screamed downwind following Bandit over the line in second and the South Australian Dave Alexander and crew  on Foxtrot in third place.

Trophies and SLAM prizes were presented by Australian Association President Warwick Rooklyn back at the club.  Kevin Nixon has us tearing up as he praised the awesome efforts in often challenging conditions of his crew, wife Glenda, daughter Bonnie and son Daniel.
