The first day of racing at the 2012 Audi Melges 20 German Open – Nepomuk Preis organized by Bayerischer Yacht Club fully supported by Melges Performance Sailboats and Melges Europe commenced on Lake Starnberg, Germany.

Due to lack of wind, the Race Committee postponed the start until after 3 p.m. in the afternoon. To past time productively, Chris Rast (in his perfect German) gave a very interesting “lesson” about the Audi Melges 20 to a very attentive audience.

Once the breeze arrived in the afternoon, it was possible to hold a short race. Cinghiale helmed by Rob Wilber and Manfredi Vianini Tolomei’s Maolca match raced ahead of the group, but the battle continues amongst the rest of the fleet. Florian Rixner on Mojito grabed third place immediately followed by Maroi of Axel Polack, helmed for the occasion by Jan Kowalski, and Carsten Giesselmann’s Selimo.

Theresa Majer, the youngest helms-girl of the European fleet had a phenomenal debut. She turned the first windward mark in fourth position and unfortunately she lost some positions finishing sixth, allowing Florian Keller and Mario Weichel on GER 160and Bernhard Behringer to advance.

After the gorgeous “Bavarian Dinner” offered yesterday to all crews by Audi Melges 20 German Fleet, tonight dinner is offered by Bayerischer Yacht Club.

The appointment for tomorrow is fixed at 9.30 on the starting line.
